BARGOU 08 – OPENING NIGHT
27 October - 20:00 22:00
Bargou, a lonely mountain village in the northwest of Tunisia, is the guardian of an ancestral heritage in a country in transition. Echoing an emblem of the Tunisian landscape, this Belgian-Tunisian collective defends a heritage on the verge of marginalization and sculpts its identity through forgotten melodies and modern beats. Armed with a synthesizer and 300-year-old lyrics, Bargou 08 displays vigour and originality, defining itself by a sound that is both a tribute to the past and an anthem to the future!
The group’s singer, Nidhal Yahyaoui, has long pursued the project of going back to the musical tradition of his native region, but only in 2013 did the group get together in the eponymous village to form what they call the Popular Musical Front. Together, they boldly revisit the cleavage between ancestral tradition and modernity, combining Targ (a dialect blending Berber and Arabic) and traditional percussions with synthesizer and drums. Preserving an age-old heritage threatened with oblivion remains at the heart of their project, to which they add an intuitive reappropriation. The result? Fiery sounds, motley and original, along with a throbbing groove and a wild ride in a world of trance that gets you dancing and dreaming.
It’s the sound of a generation, blending a people’s pride and the hope of new outlooks with rootedness and ascension – a musical experience between the mountain’s depth and the endlessness of heaven!
