Following an initial album that was a hit in Algeria and a video-clip that created a buzz on the Web and earned three nominations to the “Algerian Music Awards”, Amel Zen brings a breath of fresh air in her Canadian première, carrying the torch of a young, rebellious and creative Algeria, hungry for travel and renewal.
Barely 30 years old, Amel Zen is regarded as one of the great pop singers, lionized by Algerian youth. Revealed to the public through her top hit Kan Ikoli, she seduces, with her fiery temperament, an ever-growing audience.
With her remarkable voice and great mastery of traditional musical styles that she blends with modern accents, this lyricist, composer and performer began her career at age 10, joining several Arab-Andalusian bands as well as the National Algerian Orchestra. Following a noted performance on the TV show Alhan wa chabab (an Algerian version of Star Academy), she launched a solo career that earned her “Female Revelation” and “Most Promising Performer” awards in 2011.
Amel Zen offers a unique concert blending various musical influences and styles, from reggae to flamenco and including rock, chaabi, pop, Kabyle beats and Andalusian music. Her musical originality is backed by colourful, sparkling lyrics that sing of love, homeland, generational conflict, separation, nostalgia and hope.
